Reasons for WhatsApp messaging blocking
Last modified:
WhatsApp, like any messenger, carefully monitors mass message sending. If the activity of a number appears suspicious, the system may temporarily restrict or block it.
Below are the main reasons for blocking and recommendations that will help reduce risks.
Main reasons for blocking
Sharp increase in outgoing messages
If a large number of messages are sent from a number with a minimal number of replies, WhatsApp may consider such activity as spam.
The risk is especially high:
- When launching messaging from a new number;
- With a sharp increase in sending volume;
- If the messages are clearly promotional.
User complaints
Any recipient can mark a message as spam. If there are many such complaints, the number may be temporarily restricted. Therefore, it is important to send only relevant and expected messages.
Completely identical messages
WhatsApp analyzes the content of messages. When sending mass messages, completely identical texts may be perceived as spam.
It is recommended:
- To write in a natural, conversational style;
- To avoid aggressive advertising wording;
- To add elements of dialogue;
- To segment the audience whenever possible.
Number without communication history
New numbers or numbers without active conversations are more likely to be restricted.
For messaging, it is recommended to use a number that:
- Has already been used to communicate with clients;
- Has incoming and outgoing messages.
Repeated blocks on one device
Each smartphone has a unique identifier. If a device has previously been blocked, WhatsApp may restrict the number again—even when using another account.
How to reduce the risk of blocking
1️⃣ Test messaging before a mass launch
Before sending to a large audience, test the message on a small group (for example, 30–50 clients).
Evaluate:
- Whether there are replies;
- Whether there are complaints;
- How well the message encourages dialogue.
If the response is weak, revise the text or segment the database.
2️⃣ Get replies
The more incoming messages a number has, the safer its activity appears.
It is recommended:
- To ask questions;
- To encourage the client to reply;
- To maintain dialogue after a response.
3️⃣ Do not make messages purely promotional
Messages in the format “list of services + prices + link” are more often perceived as spam.
Better:
- Briefly explain the benefit;
- Add a unique offer;
- End the message with a question.
4️⃣ Do not send long texts
Very long messages are less likely to be read and more likely to cause a negative reaction. The optimal format is short, to the point, with clear value for the client.
5️⃣Gradually increase volumes
If the number is new or was previously used rarely:
- Start with 20–30 messages per day;
- Gradually increase the volume—by 50 messages every 2–3 days;
- Avoid sharp spikes in activity.
Even for a “warmed-up” number, it is not recommended to immediately launch messaging to a large database.
6️⃣ Control the sending speed
The lower the sending speed, the lower the risk of blocking.
It is recommended:
- To choose the minimum sending speed;
- Not to run multiple messaging at the same time.
7️⃣ Maintain activity on the number
If there is regular communication on the number, the system perceives it as a “live” account rather than a mass advertising tool. Be sure to reply to clients and maintain dialogue.
8️⃣ Use mobile internet
It is recommended to disable Wi-Fi on devices from which messaging is launched. WhatsApp may perceive multiple accounts on the same network as a pool for mass sending.
If the number is already blocked
If your number has been blocked, there is nothing critical about it. You need to submit a request for unblocking. To do this:
- Go to the official WhatsApp support form.
- Fill in the details and describe the situation.
- In the text, you can specify that the messages were sent to clients with their consent.
As a rule, unblocking takes several hours, but delays of up to 3 days are possible.
If blocks are repeated
If several blocks have occurred in a row on one device, it is recommended:
- To create a backup copy of data in Google or iCloud;
- To reset the device to factory settings;
- To set up the integration again.
This is because WhatsApp remembers the device identifier, which does not change when reinstalling the application and changes only after a factory reset.
